Free access to information is the hallmark of US libraries. Technical innovations in the last 10 years have made such access to information faster, more timely, and more convenient for information seekers, while creating unique problems for libraries.

OVGTSL 2009 will focus on library technical service units’ work towards solving these problems including:
Hosting Open Access repositories, image collections, and journals
Exploring Open Source software solutions for OPACS, citation managers, courseware, & beyond

Fundamentals of Cataloging: AV Materials

Description: NEW curriculum and NEW instructor for 2009! The Fundamentals of Cataloging series covers the basics of cataloging in five sessions. Attend all the sessions or only the ones of interest. This session will examine the the cataloging of audio-visual materials. Participants will be exposed to format-specific cataloging practices for items such as sound recordings and DVDs. Technical services staff will learn the fundamentals necessary for obtaining and editing quality AV records for their library.

Fundamentals of Cataloging: Continuing Resources

In this session, Continuing Resources will be our topic. We will cover special considerations for cataloging integrating resources and serials, including periodicals. We will focus particularly on match points for copy cataloging and title changes by looking at the principles, rules and tools for cataloging.

Who Should Attend: Staff new to cataloging continuing resources or who would like to learn more.

Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Cataloging: Description and Fundamentals of Cataloging: Subject Cataloging OR equivalent knowledge of basic cataloging.

The Future of Technical Services

Program Description:What will your library's technical services department look like in the next 5 to 10 years? What roles will technical services play in the evolution of 21st century library services? As roles change, technical services departments will need to adjust to fit those new roles. This session will make attendees keenly aware of coming trends so that they can prepare accordingly to face upcoming challenges and continue to provide quality services to patrons.

Head of Technical Services, Walsh University Library

Hours: Full-time with some shared evenings and weekends

Principal Duties:
DESCRIPTION: Plan, oversee and assess technical services operations: Acquisitions, cataloging, processing and serials in a small university library. Coordinate record loads and database cleanups to assure catalog integrity. Participate in shared responsibility with three other librarians for reference, instruction, selection and de-selection. Includes some night and weekend hours. RESPONSIBILITIES: Oversee copy cataloging, acquisitions and serials work of two support staff Perform original and complex copy cataloging Edit local records in shared database Provide reference assistance Acquire library materials and form liaisons with faculty for acquisitions and instruction Provide library instruction Keep abreast of emerging technologies and services via conferences, training and collaboration Participate in university committees

Qualification/Requirements:
ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent Two years relevant professional experience, preferably in an academic library User-focused, collaborative working style with evidence of initiative and flexibility Familiar with established cataloging standards (AACR2, LCSH, MARC) Familiar with emerging library 2.0 applications Familiar with OhioLINK/III Millennium (desired)

Deadline:
Position to begin July 1, 2009. Priority will be given to applications received by February 16, 2009.
